Eyes Don’t Lie
Episode 5 – “The Disappearing Act”
The atmosphere in the classroom is heavy. It’s the deadline for the Sports Meet uniform money. The class monitor is sitting at the front desk, while James stands right next to him, checking names off a clipboard.
James: (Checking the list) “That’s 20 people... 22... wait, Louis, where’s yours?”
Louis: (Digging through every single pocket) “I swear I had it! I even checked my socks this morning. Ah! Found it!”
He slams the money onto the desk.
Class Monitor: “Finally. Okay, the total is correct. Ma'am’s desk is empty since she's in the staff meeting. Let's put the collection envelope in her drawer like she asked.”
James watches as the monitor slides the thick yellow envelope into the top drawer of Stella Ma’am’s desk and pushes it shut. Leo watches from his seat, his eyes tracking every movement. He looks at Anna, who is busy drawing in her notebook, but she subtly taps her pen twice on the desk.
[Lunch Break]
The classroom is empty. Everyone is at the canteen except for two shadows. Leo stands by the door as a lookout, while Anna quickly walks toward Stella Ma’am’s desk.
Leo: (Whispering) “Hurry up. The ‘Chaos’ idiots will be back any second.”
Anna: (Her face is calm, almost cold) “I know what I’m doing, Leo.”
She opens the drawer, grabs the envelope, and slips it into a hidden pocket inside her school cardigan. She shuts the drawer silently, and they both vanish into the hallway just as voices approach.
[After Lunch]
The bell rings. Stella Ma’am walks in and sets her books down.
Stella Ma’am: “Alright, let’s get the admin work out of the way. Class Monitor, the money is in the drawer?”
Class Monitor: “Yes, Ma’am. James was standing right there with me when I put it in.”
Stella Ma’am pulls the drawer open. Her hand reaches in... and stops. She frowns, then pulls the drawer all the way out.
Stella Ma’am: “Where is it?”
James: (Frowning) “It’s right there, in the yellow envelope.”
Stella Ma’am: “There is no envelope here, James.”
The class goes dead silent. James rushes to the front, his face turning pale. He looks through the drawer. Empty.
Leo: (Calling out from the back) “Wait... I saw James at the desk during the lunch break. I thought he was just double-checking the count.”
James: (Turning fast) “What? I was at the canteen with Louis the whole time!”
Louis: “Yeah! He was with me! We were eating...”
(Louis pauses, looking confused)
“Wait, James, you did 𝘨𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 to get your 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦, remember? You said you forgot it.”
James: (Stuttering) “Yeah, but I was only in here for ten seconds! I didn't touch the desk!”
Stella Ma’am: “James... that is a lot of money. If it’s not here, and you were the last one seen near this desk today...”
Nivi looks at James, who looks like he’s about to faint. Then she looks at Anna. Anna is looking at her book, looking perfectly innocent—too innocent.
Nivi: (To herself) “It’s starting.”
Nivi: (Standing up suddenly) “Ma’am! I don’t think James took it. Someone is trying to frame him. We should check everyone’s bags!”
Leo: (Smirking) “Good idea, Nivi. Let’s start with James’s bag since he was the one ‘checking’ the list.”
Stella Ma’am sighs, looking disappointed.
“James, bring your bag to the front.”
James slowly brings his bag up. Stella Ma’am opens the front pocket. She reaches in and pulls out... the yellow envelope.
The class gasps. Ruby covers her mouth. Louis looks totally betrayed.
Stella Ma’am: “James... I expected better from you. Office. Now.”
James looks at the envelope, then at Nivi, his eyes pleading. Nivi looks toward the back and sees Leo and Anna exchange a quick look. Leo winks at her. Nivi feels a chill down her spine. The Chaos Club just hit its first wall.
